Your natural lens begins perfectly clear. Over time the natural collagen begins to cloud, obscuring light from hitting your retina. With enough obfuscation, your vision becomes hazy or dull, with halos or glares. Left untreated, cataracts can cause a significant deterioration of your vision.
With such a gradual condition, it is difficult to identify a burgeoning cataract. Perhaps driving at night has become problematic because of the glare from oncoming traffic, or maybe the bright colours of sunrises and sunsets are less vivid. Cataracts do not cause any physical pain, but they can make life significantly more problematic. Daily duties such as driving or cooking can be impacted by a lessened ability to make out fine details. When your cataracts prevent you from being able to perform your daily tasks to the best of your ability, surgery may be your best option. Cataract surgery is a common outpatient procedure. The ophthalmologist uses ultrasound waves to break up your natural lens into small pieces. Those pieces are removed through a small incision. Using that same incision, the surgeon places an artificial intraocular lens where the natural lens used to be. Post-surgery, eye drops aid healing and a protective shield is worn at night to prevent you from rubbing or scratching your eye.
