Controlling the Future of Myopia

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a condition that affects both children and adults. Since myopia is a progressive condition, kids with nearsightedness often have much worse eyesight by the time they are an adult. Myopia control allows us to successfully slow the progression of this disorder.

Nearsightedness

This condition is caused by an elongated eyeball or steep cornea, creating a focal point that is in front of the retina. Objects near the eyes can be focused on, while anything far away is blurry. It is extremely common and only becoming more prevalent in school-aged children.

Myopia in the Classroom

Children rely on their eyesight for learning. Myopia makes it difficult for them to see the front of the classroom. Single vision glasses and contacts can fix the distance vision but creates strain for near vision. An eye exam with an optometrist can identify vision problems early on, giving your child the best opportunity to control their myopia.

There is no cure for nearsightedness, but we can slow or halt progression.

Myopia Control

Controlling myopia could change the future of the condition. Proper myopia control has been proven to slow the progression by half. The most effective method to impede nearsightedness is by reducing eye strain.

MiSight 1 Day Contact Lenses

Just like any other part of the body, your child’s eyes grow as they get older. Unfortunately, normal eye growth can make myopia worse over time. MiSight 1 Day contact lenses helps slow down the growth of your child’s eyes, thereby mitigating the progressive nature of myopia.

Contact lens hygiene can often be a concern for children, which is why we offer MiSight 1 day lenses by Coopervision. These single-use lenses are the first of their kind, offering up to 50% reduction in the progression of myopia.

Both multifocal contacts and multifocal glasses are made with a gradient prescription. When focusing on far away objects the vision is corrected to allow clearer vision. Alternatively, the prescription in the area used to focus on objects close-up is less strong, allowing the eyes to use their natural focusing abilities.

Ask an optometrist if myopia control could work for you or your child.
